The Associated Students of CSU, Chico is recruiting for Adventure Outings Program Director . This is a full-time, exempt position that will work 11 or 12 months annually. The pay range for this position is $5,373.34/mo to $6,331.58/mo; new hires typically start at the beginning of the range. The anticipated schedule includes 8 hour shifts Monday through Friday, with some evening and weekend hours possible. The schedule is subject to change based on operational needs.

The Associated Students (AS) is a comprehensive campus auxiliary corporation of CSU,Chico serving thousands of students, faculty, staff and community members through myriad student programs, services and business enterprises. With an annual budget of more than $21M, the AS operates residential and retail dining services, the Bell Memorial Union, the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC), and administers the contract for the Wildcat Store (bookstore). Additionally, the AS offers a wide variety of services and programs such as: CAVE (Community Action Volunteers in Education), Child Development Lab, Adventure Outings, Sustainability and student government. Typically, the AS employs more than 100 full and part-time employees and more than 750 students.

ADVENTURE OUTINGS PROGRAM DIRECTOR

SUMMARY

Develop, implement, and coordinate Adventure Outings program including a student-led trips program, teambuilding program, equipment rental program, bike repair shop, special events, and campus outreach


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop and evaluate program goals and objectives
  • Establish and review program policies, procedures, and practices
  • Develop program calendar of trips, workshops, and events
  • Design and implement outdoor-based teambuilding experiences for campus programs and departments
  • Ensure programs are consistent with student feedback and conducted in accordance with industry and governing body standards
  • Manage Get Outdoors Fund to ensure program access to students regardless of ability level or barriers to participation
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise student trip/teambuilding leaders and managers
  • Oversee the Assistant Leader internship program including instruction of an academic course each semester
  • Maintain and oversee Adventure Outings’ online registration system
  • Supervise the equipment rental center, including staff, budget, policies, and equipment maintenance
  • Purchase, maintain, repair, and inventory a wide variety of equipment and vehicles
  • Supervise the bike repair shop including staff, budget, policies, equipment maintenance, and bike auctions
  • Develop, monitor and administer budgets
  • Maintain annual use permits with land management agencies
  • Write and administer grants
  • Train staff in driving vans and towing trailers
  • Orchestrate basic vehicle maintenance and annual inspections
  • Maintain accurate records and provide participation and financial reports
  • Establish and maintain a comprehensive risk management plan for all program areas
  • Ensure programming is inclusive and conducted in accordance with industry and governing body standards
  • Represent Associated Students and Adventure Outings to the campus community, the public, and other organizations
  • Lead staff trainings, trips, and events as needed
  • Other duties may be assigned

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in an office and student union building environment and outside environments, including exposure to dust, heat and possible adverse weather conditions; continuous contact with staff, campus community, and public.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Occasional travel to conferences, trainings, or retreats typically held in California.

  • Principles, practices, and procedures of varied indoor and outdoor recreational activities and programs
  • Cultural, social, recreational, educational, and service objectives and needs of a university community
  • Risk management practices and procedures
  • Budget development and oversight
  • Principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation
  • Plan, develop, and implement a diverse Adventure Outings program for the Associated Students
  • Recruit, supervise, train, and evaluate staff for all program activities and functions
  • Analyze Adventure Outings programs, developing methods to achieve goals
  • Ensure programs and events meet the needs of the campus community
  • Organize data, maintain records and prepare reports
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community, co-workers, and general public
  • Work well under pressure: meeting multiple and sometimes competing deadlines


MINIMUM EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three (3) years, or seasonal/part-time equivalent, of experience in the development, supervision/management, training and implementation of outdoor recreation.
  • Technical competency in at least two (2) of the following skill areas: whitewater rafting and/or kayaking, rock climbing, backpacking, teambuilding/challenge course facilitation .

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Degree coursework related to outdoor recreation or recreation administration.
  • Experience in outdoor recreation and teambuilding programming for a campus population.
  • Industry certifications with AMGA, PCIA, ACA, or similar.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months of hire, a current and valid California Class C Driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Possession of current Wilderness First Responder and CPR/AED certifications.
  • Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. Associated Students will make a conditional offer of employment which may be rescinded if the background check reveals any disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current Associated Students employees who apply for the position.
