What does a Community Health Worker, Probation do?
Positions are assigned to the Education Services Unit of the Probation Department and function as program professionals tasked with providing high quality support to youth in various Camps and Halls. The Community Health Worker specializes in post-secondary support and employment preparation among other services.
Some essential duties include:
- Educating youth and young adults by learning the functions of departmental programs and community resources; providing information and educational materials of departmental programs, social services, and community resources.
- Coordinating tutoring services and/or linkage services for literacy programs for at-risk youth and young adults; and providing instructional activities and support to clients in order to stay up to date on current trainings, policies, and resources that are available.
- Communicating with various partner organizations; and explaining programs (e.g., work programs, higher-education programs, secondary education) and providing youth and young adults with the appropriate tools for transitioning back into society.
- Assisting youth and young adults by preparing and receiving service referrals; intaking family, social, and employment histories; coordinating and implementing academic support services; obtaining and completing application forms for benefits and services.
- Serving as a liaison by coordinating appointments between the community, community-based resource facilities, and County/State departments/departmental employees.
- Preparing/maintaining various documents and providing information on the progress of clients to the appropriate party (e.g., supervisors, co-workers, parents/guardians, probation officers, community based organizations coordinators, court officials, school officials, social workers).

Requirements
CANDIDATES MUST MEET ONE OF THE BELOW REQUIREMENTS.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
OPTION I: Six months of full-time experience working with the public or with community groups performing duties such as interviewing clients or patients concerning health or social service matters, answering questions, and providing information about health, mental health, and social services to clients or patients.
OPTION II: Six months of experience at the level of the Los Angeles County class of Mental Health Advocate.
Work performed part-time in the specified capacities will be prorated on a month-for-month basis.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:
- Experience at the level of Los Angeles County's class of Mental Health Advocate is defined as providing a variety of peer support, advocacy, and other recovery services to clients transitioning to community living.
County employees who wish to meet the requirements using out-of-class experience will be considered for this examination. Those claiming out-of-class experience should describe their out-of-class duties in detail in the Work Experience and Supplemental Questions sections of their application.
LICENSE:
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
PHYSICAL CLASS:
2 - Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.
