POSITION PURPOSE
The University of Washington’s Department of Geography has been consistently ranked as one of the top ten geography programs in the United States for the last fifty years. We currently have approximately 400 undergraduate majors and 30 graduate students pursuing M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Our degree programs emphasize rigorous theoretical and empirical study of real-world problems. Our students are deeply engaged in community service through internships, service learning, and senior projects that center questions of environmental and
social justice. Our faculty are involved in research projects covering a wide range of inquiry and are well-regarded for their teaching and research excellence.

The department seeks a dynamic and innovative 50% time academic advisor to work with our diverse community of current and
prospective students in the geography majors and minor. The principal tasks of the position are to advise undergraduate students and position them for success in their academic and career pursuits. Reports to Director of Academic Services.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Advising (70%)
  • Counsel undergraduate students in the geography major & minor, including prospective students, concerning admissions, internships, graduate school options, academic fields of study, registration, barriers to college persistence, and degree and career planning.
  • Review and process graduation applications.
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources and student support services.
  • Communicate with students via email, phone, virtual meeting and in person.
  • Support students engaged in various petition processes, including current and former quarter drop, financial aid satisfactory progress appeals, reinstatement, reenrollment, grade concerns, graduation petitions, etc.
  • Participate in New Student Advising & Orientation sessions.
  • Host Transfer Thursday drop-in hours and information sessions, and support prospective and current transfer students with the transition to UW.
  • Advocate for students from historically and currently marginalized populations in a PWI, particularly those who identify as
    underrepresented minority (URM), undocumented, or first-generation.

    Programming (10%)
  • Support and plan events such as an annual convocation ceremony and reception, undergraduate research symposium, career panels, and other social activities.
  • Advertise courses to the UW community using print, web and social media.
  • Support undergraduate student RSOs and other community building projects.

    Outreach & Collaboration: (10%)
  • Participate in college and community advising and outreach events; conduct outreach & support for underrepresented students.
  • Share updates and announcements with students, and maintain memberships in student listserv.
  • Support communication and outreach efforts using social media and website.

    Other Duties as Assigned (10%)
  • Collaborate on teaching career exploration & professional development courses for undergraduate students.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
    Bachelors’ Degree AND a minimum of two years of relevant student services experience.

    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Demonstrated ability to work creatively in a collaborative work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate across difference and commitment to antiracist, transformative higher education.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working with and supporting a diverse student population at a four-year institution.
  • Career coaching or advising experience, and/or familiarity with.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective communications outreach, including creative use of social media.
  • Teaching and/or facilitation experience.
  • Knowledge of University of Washington academic procedures, policies and administrative systems (e.g., SDB, DARS, MyPlan).
