The
Phlebotomy Technician
is responsible for invasive procedures and techniques involved in the collectio! n of blood specimens from patients for laboratory use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The Phlebotomy Technician serves as a primary link for the laboratory and interacts with physicians, guests, patients, family members, and other Children's staff to obtain or clarify information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears and elicit cooperation and collect specimens. They work effectively with others to meet the needs of the patient and care providers.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Properly and safely collect laboratory specimens from patients, newborn through age 21, while utilizing customer service requirements, age specific behaviors and following department and system policies and procedures.
Collects laboratory specimens to include blood, throat cultures, urine, glucose tolerance, blood culture, and cross matches from pediatric patients of all ages in accordance with accepted laboratory standards, polici! es and procedures (operational and safety) in order to ensure ! optimal specimen integrity and accurate test results.
In addition, must be able to perform sweat chloride collections according the national Cystic Fibrosis Foundation requirements.
Perform safely a variety of invasive blood collection procedures. Works with bio-hazardous specimens, contaminated sharps, blood collection and other medical equipment. Must be familiar with and use standard precautions. Frequently works with different levels of isolation with a diverse patient population.
Performs various duties in the specimen processing area of the laboratory including preparation of samples for testing and specimen management in the laboratory information system. Triages and processes laboratory specimens efficiently and accurately in accordance with accepted laboratory standards, policies and procedures and prepares specimens for laboratory testing by using centrifuge to spin blood.
Professional attitude with patients including assistance! with patient's questions and giving instructions on specimen collection and handling.
Maintains current technical knowledge and skills as defined in Laboratory Competency policy.
Performs annual written and observed competency testing.
Performs computer duties related to specimen collection and patient care.
Research test/client information using laboratory computer system
Accurate data entry skills in verifying correct patient information and requested tests
Receives, interprets, and processes physician orders, requisitions and patient information.
Perform functions related to releasing laboratory results to authorized individuals. Maintaining patient confidentiality and patient privacy related to related to HIPPA.
Monitors and troubleshoots daily the LIS error log, specimen collection pending log and the handheld collection device
Prepares the patient in a developmentally appropriate manner ! by recognizing the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups of pa! tients treated, i.e., understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescent behavior. Properly identifies the patient, utilize written procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification.
Monitors test ordering patterns and requisitions to ensure compliance with outpatient laboratory testing and Managed Care Insurance guidelines. Resolves pending specimens and pending transports.
Assists in the orientation and training of newly hired phlebotomists and processing personnel.
Identifies and prepares patients and specimens by confirming demographic information for specimen collections, processing, preparation and distribution.
Performs multiple communication tasks to include the use of telephone, fax, printers, and computers.
Maintains equipment, supplies, and work area. Assist in ensuring a clean and safe environment and work area, which is functional as well as professional in appearance, safe for pat! ient care, the public and staff. Maintains compliance with standards set by the Children's and all regulatory / accrediting agencies.
Participates in education programs in the laboratory to ensure the highest degree of competency within the established scope of patient care. Participates in laboratory and Children's performance improvement and quality assurance programs and initiatives.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A high school diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of 1 year pediatric hospital experience or at least 3 years phlebotomy experience required
including venipunctures on newborns through adolescent age groups preferred and laboratory processing preferred
ASCP Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent preferred
CPR (American Heart Association) certified required.
Must have knowledge of laboratory specimen collection procedures and understand basic medical terminology.
Able to perform clerical du! ties (filing and receptionist activities).
Laboratory Computer! skills preferred.
Ability to perform multiple, concurrent tasks in a frequently stressful environment while maintaining strong customer service standards in dealing with customers and co-workers.
Demonstrates strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Must have strong customer service skills related to answering telephone and interacting with a diverse customer base.
Must have excellent prioritization skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks, as well as good resolution skills. Must have skills related to teaching, assessing and training of staff.
Must be able to successfully pass the Basic Windows Skill Assessment at 80% or higher rating
within 30 days of date of hire.
