Job Summary:
Position is located in the Radiology Service Line, within the Ultrasound Section. Diagnostic Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical pu! rposes. The Ultrasound technologist must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment. The Ultrasound technologist is regaded as the expert source of all ultrasound imaging, and the interpreting radiologist relies heavily on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the Ultrasound technologist in providing a final interpretation. Withing this specialization, there is a diverse range of ultrasound imaging sub-specialties that include: abdominal, vascular, extremiey, and reproductive systems.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
The incumbent registers patient and procedures(s) in the VISTA Radiology Package, obtains the appropriate case number and status tracks images to i! ndicate that the procedure has been completed. To ensure correct worklo! ad capture, the technologist must be cognizant of Common Procedure Codes and add/edit Radiology case numbers to reflect exactly what exams were performed. The technologist will review images/image sets upon completion to ensure acceptable image quality prior to sending images to the PACS for interpretation. Retrieves pertinent patient information from the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) whe necessary. Enters patient education and other notes in the EMR when necessary. Technologist is knowledgeable of Teleradiology guidellines and maintains technical skills to ensure that images are successfully routed off-station. The technologist must ensure that images are successfully transferred to the intended destination prior to leaving their duty station.

Relocation Expenses: PCS/Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Recruitment/Relocation Incentives will not be authorized.

Work Schedule: 4:30pm to 9:00pm Part-Time, 20 to 30 hours per ! week. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Proficient in spoken and written English. (To be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, serving in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA, applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.)
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (must provide copy with application package).
Experience or Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associateÂ's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certifiation by the American Registry of Radi! ologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology (must provide copy of transcri! pt/certificate with application package).

Preferred Experience:
In addition to the basic requirements listed above for this position, the following additional qualification is strongly desired for this position:
Candidates should be certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) in Ultrasound (must provide proof with application package).

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Requirements for GS-9, Staff DRT: Employees at this level are fully functional as a DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographis procedures. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. !

(a) Experience ( NOTE: Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic requirements listed above .) At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level (GS-8) that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level, i.e., experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities (KSA), associated with current radiologic technology practice. KSAs for GS-8, which all candidates must fully meet: (1) Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines; (2) Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed; (3) Knowledge of patientÂ's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results; (4) Ability to monitor patientÂ's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed; (5) Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and vol! unteers; and (6) Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-section! al anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.

In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for the GS-9 level and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specifc KSAs designated by an asterisk (*): (*1) Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures; (2) Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; (*3) Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure; (4) Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; (5) Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, instravenous skills, and universal precautions; and (6) Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

Creditable Experience
(a) Knowledge of Current Ra! diologic Technology Practice. To be creditable, experience must have demonstrated possession of the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (also referred to as Â"core competenciesÂ") associated with current radiologic technology practice. This may have been evidenced by the equivalent of 1 year of active practice, which is paid or non-paid employment as a DRT as defined by ARRT.
(b) Quality of Experience. Experience is only creditable if it was earned after completion of the basic requirements identified in paragraph 2.b. above. Experience as a graduate DRT is creditable provided the candidate functioned as a DRT and subsequently passed the certification examination.
(c) Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a DRT is creditable according to its relationship to full-time workweek. For example, a DRT would receive 1 week of full-time credit for each 2 weeks of half-time work.
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per ! week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actual! ly spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Specialized Assignment Definitions.

Specialized areas of radiologic technology include general diagnostic radiologic technology (R), bone densitometry (BD), mammography (M), diagnostic ultrasound (S), computed tomography (CT), positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MR), cardiovascular-interventional technology (CV), and quality management (QM).

Diagnostic Ultrasound (Sonography) (S).

Positions should be assigned to the DRT, GS-647 series, when both ultrasound and other modalities which require the delivery of ionizing radiation are performed. Positions in which ultrasound duties are performed exclusively (no other modalities are performed), should be assigned! to the Medical Instrument Technician, GS-649 series, since ultrasound duties solely do not require the delivery of ionizing radiation. Diagnostic ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques for medical purposes. The practitioner must be competent in the production, use, recognition, and analysis of ultrasound images and patterns used for patient diagnosis and treatment. The sonographer is regarded as the expert source of all ultrasound imaging, and the interpreting radiologist relies heavily on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the sonographers in providing a final interpretation. Within this specialization there is a diverse range of ultrasound imaging sub-specialties. These include: 1) diagnostic medical sonography - abdominal, neurologic, obstetrical/gynecologic, and ophthalmic; 2) cardiac sonography - adult and pediatric echocardiography; and 3) vascular technology - vascular and related organs.
