About the Position:
The primary purpose for the establishment of this job is to: (1) perform computerized axial tomographic scanning; (2) direct the work of lower grade technologists/technicians, as required; and (3) perform administrative tasks, as required. Serve as the technician on-call at night and weekends.

DUTIES:
Perform computerized axial tomographic scanning of heads and/or bodies. Patients range from pediatric to adult, to include geriatric and seriously ill or injured patients. Receives patient, explains methods of procedure, positions patient and makes exposures necessary for the requested examination. Independently makes standard examinations. Confers with radiologist to establish requirements of nonstandard examination and determines technical factors, positioning, number and thickness cut of scans, etc., to satisfy the requirements. Schedule patients for examinations.
Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate them. Assist the radiologist in the performance of interventional procedures, to include setting up the room. Assures appropriate equipment, sterile supplies, contrast material and special wires, catheters, etc., are present in sufficient quantity and in working order. Prepares and administers contrast agents under the direction of the physician, to include obtaining intravenous access and choosing the appropriate rate and amount for contrast administration to achieve an optimal scan. Perform routine and emergency radiographic and fluoroscopic exams when not performing CT exams.
Instruct lower graded personnel in positioning, technical factors, equipment, etc., while preparing or accomplishing tomographic scanning. Provide on-the-job training to military and civilian x-ray technologists. Instruct residents and newly assigned staff in the use of equipment and procedures. Instruct military radiological technologist students on methods of performing and printing computerized tomography scans.
Maintain a record of contrast usage and contrast reactions. Ensures that the appropriate consent forms are completed and entered into the patient record and/or files. Files films, reports and accomplishes related support duties to ensure complete recording and documentation of studies. Inventories and requisitions supplies on a weekly basis.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Minimum Qualifications:
Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements: (1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency. Specialized Experience: One year of experience in the same or similar work equivalent to at least the next lower level (GS-07) requiring application of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the position being filled. Candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess specialized experience which involves the ability to successfully provide computerized tomography studies for diagnosis and treatment of patients for such problems as brain tumors and similar hard to detect lesions in the body. Education Substitution for Specialized Experience: At least two full years of graduate education or a masters degree directly related to the work of the position being filled. Combination of Experience and Education: If you have some but not all of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you do have. To do so, compute the percentage of your requirements met, the sum of which must equal at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education beyond the initial 18 by 18. Add the two percentages.)

Personnel security investigation required. A medical examination is required prior to employment. Hepatitis B immunization is required (direct patient contact). This position is covered by the Drug Abuse Testing Program. Applicant drug testing and random drug testing will be required. Mandatory seasonal influenza vaccinations required annually. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. Direct Deposit of pay is required. This position requires a Childcare Background Check (CNACI). Heavy lifting (in excess of 45 lbs) may be required. Moving expenses will not be paid.
